This will be the final carrots from Ahoaho māra kai until Summer. Ahoaho have done a great job keeping Ōtaki Vege Bags in nearly constant supply of carrots since November last year, but the limited space they have to work with is finally catching up - winter Carrots needs to be in the ground by February. Crooked Vege put an area approximately half the size of ahoaho into carrots back then, so will be taking over the carrot supply soon!

This week we have:

  1. Salad (Ahoaho māra kai)

  2. Carrots (Ahoaho māra kai)

  3. Microgreens or Radicchio (Crooked Vege Ōtaki)

  4. Beetroot (Crooked Vege Ōtaki)

  5. Coriander or Parsley (Crooked Vege Ōtaki)

  6. Green Cabbage (Live2Give Organics)

  7. Fennel (Common Property)

  8. Kale (Common Property)

Vege highlights, tips & recipes

Radicchio

Less-well-known in Aotearoa, radicchio is a much loved crop in the Mediterranean. Radicchio looks like a really beautiful lettuce, but it is much more bitter - which challenges many kiwi’s palette! Crooked Vege mostly grow radicchio for a couple of fine dining restaurants, but we also like to share anything unusual we grow with Ōtaki Vege Bag members.

Our favourite way to use it is to grill it and then toss it together with roasted carrots and fennel - here’s a basic method to grill it. I often like to add a little honey too.

It’s also nice in a salad with a olive oil and lemon/orange/balsamic vinegar dressing. If you have some feta to throw in, the flavours pair well!

Ka kite ano,
Jon
